state of the art Moistened Orb Technology

All the surface parameters work the same as URP Lit, with PBR maps, occlusion, normals, tiling details/masks, etc, and the translucency parameters can also be texture-driven

You can get a ton of realism by modulating the blur radius by roughness, so matte areas also scatter more

Also built a whole material inspector for it, so from the artists' perspective it works exactly like the regular URP shaders

conceptually it's split into an "exterior" layer that acts like a PBR surface coating, and an "interior" layer that controls scattering/tint/refraction

Even dialing it all the way down to *one* sample per pixel still looks surprisingly good on typical materials. Works even better in motion since you can randomize the tap locations every frame (I cannot show you this because it OBLITERATES video compression lmao)

importance sampling is a gigantic pain to figure out but it's like absurdly good at this lol

this is 20 samples with a blur radius of something like 600px

sure it's noisy and there's fireflies, but like, a separable blur would take 2400 taps and this is 20

Fun comparisons with the standard URP transparent shader. URP doesn't have tinting, refraction, scattering, or shadows, and we mostly make medical sims where nearly EVERYTHING is made of translucent plastic so we needed our own solution

More translucent surfaces scatter light through the back side

(fundamentally it's the same "render with reversed normals and add" approach other engines use for leaves/cloth/etc, but integrated into the rest of the shading math so it's modulated and tinted consistently)

Custom renderer for highly-scattering semitransparent materials in URP. Mainly meant for soft medical plastics, but also handles dirty/rough glass and acrylic nicely

So yeah! For a weekend project I'm super happy with it

I think if I saw these by themselves I'd def just assume they were photos of screens

Starting with generally dark images and then overexposing can look really good

tends to bring out the reflected glare layer in a way that looks remarkably realistic

Took a bunch of reference photos with different phones and made a couple different postprocess presets for different looks

none of it looks *exactly* like any specific phone, but I got close enough to the general Aesthetic that I'm really happy with the end result

Just a big postprocess volume that handles all the remaining effects

Slightly too aggressive exposure curve, slightly wrong white balance, subtle but very broad bloom, vignetting, vignette tinted slightly purplish to fake the LCD color shift toward the edges

Nearest-neighbor debayering just grabs the missing channels from the adjacent pixels

it produces these really characteristic zigzag artifacts on sharp edges. Almost nothing uses this anymore, but really shitty phones and old digicams did it and I always though it looked neat

with importance sampling and enough care put into distributing sample locations over space+time you can get absurdly good results from even 1 sample per pixel

Combination of weird mesh normals + speculars going into the wrong buffers. Custom skin rendering tech goes wild trying to calculate scattering from bad inputs

almost looks more like a cheesy after effects plugin than something getting rendered in realtime lol

I should note: importance-sampling the diffusion profile in a spiral isn't a novel invention here; HDRP's SSS does it, and it's useful in lots of other applications

the novelty part is "what if I just used a pic of my arm lol"

Had to figure out how distribute points in fibonacci spirals whose density corresponds to an arbitrary radial image

I'm not remotely the first person to do this (it's basically how Unreal's Spiral Blur works, for example), but it was a giant pain to work out from principles lol

generate sample points, with their positions distributed by importance-sampling the image luminance and also some cool spiral stuff, and then randomizing the orientation via Ye Olde Blue Noise

Easy to describe but an UNBELIEVABLE headache to actually implement

Approach was basically: Take skin photo, do a bunch of photoshop layer math to subtract out ambient lighting and divide out skin tone, and then use the resulting gradient as a description of how each channel should be scattered

"image-based diffusion profiles" is a really cool-sounding way to say "I literally took a photo of my actual arm and used it to drive the scattering math"

now you know all of the things that I have learned about Shitty HDR

now you too have the power to create images so Shitty that they are physically upsetting to behold

For example: Shitty HDR is commonly associated with luridly over-saturated colors, likely due to Adobe's wildly irresponsible decision to include a Vibrance slider

But if you underexpose and OVER-gamma, you can achieve the Shitty HDR subgenre of Irradiated Greyscape Zebra Hell

So here's my version:

- Bilateral filter
- Detail extracted by dividing original image by the bilateral'd version
- Tonemap bilateral (not shown but I just used ACES)
- Boost intensity of detail to improve Shittiness
- Multiply detail and tonemapped values back together

Reveal! subtle details lost in overexposed regions, then Annihilate them once again with lurid ringing artifacts!

Transform! natural textures into Microwaved blue noise!

Give! yourself a migraine at Sixty Frames Per Second!

This has a major shortcoming: It has nothing to do with transmission. Like, at all. It's picking up blurry *reflected* light from the probe

so like, when viewed from below, we see green grass reflecting OFF the bottom of the cloud, instead of seeing blue sky filtered THROUGH it

In this case I'm not even "properly" blurring the gradient, just doing finite-difference with a hilariously huge distance

here's varying the sample radius between 1 voxel and 30

the result is never Correct but it looks increasingly Good as it gets softer

Hack: just use a really, really blurry version of the local gradient to sample the environment SH

Softens the lighting so much it almost starts to look like scattering. Akin to the old wrapped-diffuse trick but more extreme

Compression smudges the details obviously, but keep in mind that nothing's directly reading the image or setting a pixel brightness here. It's two million separate particles with constant brightness changing their positions

All of the weird CA-like rules for inter-particle interactions that I used for the earlier images are still here, and they can still work together with the forces that produce the stipple effect

works surprisingly well with webcam input

Really like the way it sort of picks out long/thin details like hair and the glasses frames

worth noting the particles are barely 1px across and VERY low alpha; every dot you see is actually a clump of dozens of them pushed together by gradient forces

This is mainly just velocity feedback. Particles write their velocity to a buffer, blur it, and then sample the blurred velocity when updating their new positions. Decay/smoothing/curvature are tuning vars but the feedback does most of it

Using the previous rasterized image as an influence on the gradients, meaning particles can be affected by their neighborhoods

You can generate these types of patterns p trivially. "Scatterer" here basically just means "waves emanating from a point." Just make a bunch of sines and sum them all up

Play with arrangements of scatterer positions, strengths, frequency distributions etc for wide variation

I've had dithering in the tonemapping for a while, but: I just weighted each RGB channel differently according to its perceived luminance, thus simulating higher bit depth by spreading the gradient across three channels

For further comparison, here's the current state of the grid-based sim, which runs at 60FPS

Note you can actually make out separate organs. The huge dark shapes are bones, which SHOULD be black bc ultrasound can't penetrate them. Not sure why particle sim lights them up

for an A/B comparison, here's 30 minutes vs 17.5 hours, which is something like 450 million particles vs 15.7 billion

notice how the shadows are almost completely absent in the first image; they're a result of the way scattering works, which requires a TON of samples to capture

Added kinda hacky scattering math, updated it so that particles that leave the sim space get re-emitted from the transducer, and ran it for 17.5 hours

Result is... not *correct*, but not wildly implausible either

So here's an (idealized) single pulse of energy along a single direction, analogous to an A-mode line in actual ultrasound

(the grey image isn't coming from the sim; it's just displaying the underlying anatomy that the waves interact with)

So earlier images simulating 1D wave propagation on a texel grid. Now trying an alternate approach using huge numbers of particles, representing stochastic effects like diffuse reflections by just doing dice rolls for every particle

Makes a very cool visualization at least

Seeding the center of the field is really cool bc usually everything stays symmetrical until the slightest imperfection manifests and then the whole thing goes wild

i did gray-scott im finally a real graphics programmer

Cleaned up a whole lot of initialization code; subsequently put a bit more polish into the loading animation now that it actually runs smoothly

Single fullscreen gradients are a bit monotonous, so the next step was to support MULTIPLE gradients, and use the material depths from the L-buffers as masks to blend between them in interesting ways

Depth values are HDR, so there's a ton of room to play around with mask params

First step towards that end: COLOR

Initial basis was literally just Photoshop's Gradient Map reimplemented in shaders. Make a gradient with the inspector, generate texture from gradient, use greyscale (LDR) x-ray value as lookup into gradient texture

Another fun consequence of the X-ray sim: moving vertices around inherently affects the density calculations (verts further apart = more material to attenuate rays), which allows lots of room for weird VFX stuff

This particular effect didn't end up in the game but the gif's cool

So after some early prototyping we switched to Unity, I got all the X-ray math worked out, @artofblake made a quick heart model, and I started working on a procedural heartbeat vertex shader

Incredibly realistic

Pack those tables into lookup textures and you can pick any input wavelength and render out a texture encoding the voltage striking a detector after your X-rays have passed through the mesh

Tone-map voltages down to LDR with your favorite curves, high-pass filter, and behold:

First up: The X-ray images in the game are an actually physically-correct simulation.

Tried warping the slope gradients and headed towards some kind of 2D texturing aesthetic and okay this is DEFINITELY going places

Dropping noise detail: Shading gets much nicer, but all the mountain shapes are boring now and it looks very... computery

Alternatively: 8 octaves with 200 slices achieves FULL BRYCE 3D

Idea: use ddx on slice height to get 1D slope value, use that as lookup into a gradient to approximate shading

Result is... weird? Kills most of the softness that made it look nice before. Prob worth experimenting further

Large areas of smoke now blur the background, thus maintaining a sense of volume as the smoke dissipates

At lower grid resolutions it gets really abstract and cool

Oooh here's a cool modification: Each color channel is resampled onto a grid rotated 60° off from the other two

Sorta like CMYK screentone patterns but additive and made of squares

Aerobat resampled onto diagonal pixel grid is a pretty cool look

Randomizing initial UVs shifts the shapes/motion around a bit, so if you spawn a ton of them you still get particle-like variation across individual bursts

The base effect all one shader on one quad, using a single texture containing noise+color info packed into channels; no particles or flipbook animation
