Code Geass Thread
don't get your hopes up
literal opening shot is cicadas in case you were wondering if it's an anime
CLAMP truly draws the longest boys
So the thing is, like... I've never watched this before but the entire internet was like 90% Code Geass memes for the entirety of 2006 and 2007
I thus KNOW all of the Code Geass memes, because I have lived my life Irredeemably Online, but I do not know their context
Also this took all of three episodes to get to the high school girls harassing each other about bust sizes, in case anyone required further confirmation that this is extremely An Anime
Good morning I'm thinking about how the first episode introduced Lelouch's genius by depicting him
- Winning a seemingly-impossible chess game
- Reading Hamret on a motorcycle
If the rest of the writing possesses a similar level of restraint/subtlety this is going to be *wild*
Pretty sure I've got a 120p video of the opening song buried in a folder of osu beatmaps on a hard drive somewhere
The first mention of the word "Geass" is in a 30-second recap before the theme song
Apparently the protag's eye power is named Geass
You'd think they would have put that somewhere in the actual dialogue
the first like six seconds of JIBUN WOOOOOO was clearly written *explicitly* to be played during a climactic fight scene that also represents an emotional turning point for the main characters somewhere close to the end of the first season right
this is literally just death note but anime
I love that they have catapult launches for the mecha that can't fly and mostly move around on rollerblades
this is not an irony post it legit rules
I was trying to remember which episode I was on and clicked a random spot on the scrubber and it was just Steve Blum saying the dumbest conceivable line with utmost conviction
I'm not even watching the dub Steve Blum is just omnipresent
Honestly bless that man and his utter dedication to flawlessly delivering the most dumbass dialogue ever written
welp that was the table-kun meme I guess
oh wow the table thing was so awkward they had to change the theme song
there's some honestly pretty good plotting going on so far
it's rad how lelouch and suzaku are presented as ideological opponents but both of their ideologies suck ass lol
aaaAAAAAAAAARM
lmaooo I finally got to the actual I'm At Soup episode
there's... literally no reason for this to be a mecha show besides "mecha are cool as hell" lol
they serve no narrative or thematic purpose; every action scene that involves them would work exactly the same with guns or swords or whatever
this isn't a complaint of course, mecha are cool as hell
This whole show is about setting up legitimately complex moral dilemmas and then finding increasingly ridiculous ways to wiggle out of needing to actually confront them, and then none of the characters learn anything from these experiences because they're all colossal dumbasses
time to lengthen this thread
Previously: It spent 80% of an episode setting up a big ideologically-driven fight between the two dudes, and then they happened to step on a previously-invisible magic rune, and then the ground collapsed,
and then they fell into a cave where a bunch of completely unrelated science characters, for completely unrelated reasons, literally just happened to be hanging out looking at runes, along with a Very Special prototype mecha, which lelouch immediately steals
the moral thrust of this episode is "now they have a cooler robot"
I think the only character I really like is Kallen, but she's giving off some immensely powerful Going To Tragically Sacrifice Herself To Save The Main Characters vibes
into the last few episodes of the first season and uh that was an absolutely incredible twist with the flimsiest conceivable justification
it rules that the protagonist has a super OP prototype mecha but is actually kind of a terrible pilot
okay finished the first season
this show is A Lot
it's like the Platonic ideal of A Lot
The International Bureau of Weights and Measures keeps this show under a glass dome in a climate-controlled vault: the Canonical A Lot
btw if you don't know what At Soup is referring to, please watch one of my favoritest stupid internet videos of all time

that characterization is perhaps a BIT unfair given that Clamp is one of the actual creators of the aesthetic that dA teens in the 2000s were trying to emulate
still though
deviantartcore
Kallen microwaves one robot every episode and it's always the most painstakingly animated sequence in the entire show
it's treated with the gravity of like a magical transformation sequence but it's a semi-important side character melting some faceless level 1 mook, every time
lelouch's large adult dad
