It is time to play the game that dared to ask, "What if Far Cry was Good?"
This is a record of a twitter thread, originally posted in 2018
I've never actually played this game at above like 20FPS and this is kind of a transcendent experience rn
ppl trying to meme the turkeys in the new far cry and 2007's over here letting you shot-put a chicken through a man's ribcage
Violent Videogame
twitter resolution made it kinda hard to see but that's literally blood splattering on the screen because I shot a hat
Okay so
the drill press
The Drill Press is the reason Crysis is GOTY every single year since 2007
The Drill Press is one of the heaviest props in the game, and for some reason it is marked as carryable
The distance you can throw objects does not depend on their weight
The Drill Press is not affected by walls
The Drill Press is *barely* affected by TRUCKS
The Drill Press is the best thing to ever happen to videogames
Bless every game that really commits to doing AI/physics interaction
DRILL
PRESS
!!!
The rules are: You can use rockets on helicopters and boats, since you can't hit them with the Drill Press
You can use armor mode to heal while in cover, but not to tank damage. Strength mode only while in combat
This means jeeps are essentially the final boss of this mode. The Drill Press can kill them but it takes 5-10 hits, and the mounted gun kills you in seconds
lots of tense moments dashing out of cover to attack, and then chasing after the Press to retrieve it
Having an incredibly powerful weapon that you have to throw at things to use, and then sprint to wherever it landed while defenseless, is a ridiculously good design for a game tbh
I mean in fairness it's not thaaaaat hard of an effect to implement so much as just Very Expensive (i.e. inventing SSAO ranks way higher on the technical mind-blowy scale) but it was still *years* before the effect began showing up in other games
(for those unaware, Crysis also features the first implementation of SSAO, and thus more or less defined the overall look of most of a console generation)
when the game was new this section was virtually unplayable on my 8800 GT but I forged ahead by dropping the display resolution to like 800x600 lol
Oh wow I forgot what a letdown the last level is. Didn't really notice it at the time but I think it was super rushed? The whole thing's like... really unpolished compared to the rest of the game; lots of setpiece animations with awkward VFX and missing sound effects etc
I think Warhead's ending was pretty fun though?
I played the first sections of both the main game and Warhead a ton, but never the endings bc once the ice shader shows up they both became nearly unplayable on my hardware lol
Haha I was wondering why Crysis sets up a bunch of Plot Mysteries and then ends in a cliffhanger, and Warhead resolves nothing, and then Crysis 2 starts like 20 years later
Apparently there was a *comic book* that finished the actual plot, and also killed the protagonist lmao
Pressing onward, into Crysis Warhead
Pick Up
