the genre just completely embraces the fact that the only verb games know is "attack"
the protagonist sees evil and injustice, and defeats it, bc they are literally incapable of nuanced thought. A level 3 bandit captain and the Space Pope are morally indistinguishable to this walking X button, and that is why they will succeed where every NPC fails
If killing the Pope does not end evil, they will kill the emperor. If killing the emperor does not end evil, they will kill God himself. They will whack God with a sword. They will push X until God dies of sword bonks and then the World will be Saved by sheer bloody-minded idiocy
This is why JRPGs are good
I can think of no fantasy more compelling than to live in a world where literally every problem I have can be solved by hitting it with a sword
