started watching Super Dimension Fortress Macross and holy shit
This is a record of a twitter thread, originally posted in 2020
omg their spaceships suck ass this rules
I did not at all expect Super Dimension Fortress Macross to be slapstick comedy with mecha but this is amazing
every time the villains are about to appear onscreen it plays this DEAFENINGLY loud fanfare of Evil Trumpets that just obliterates whatever scene you were just watching
can't post it because there's no way to spoiler-tag images but let it be known that this show just pulled one of the funniest sight gags I've seen in ages
this show started REALLY strong and then has just been steadily draining momentum for like ten straight episodes. Extremely did not need a "protagonist is in A Funk due to Being Bad At Emotions" arc lol
still got 15 episodes left so hopefully it picks back up eventually
Animation was kinda meh for a while but this episode is suddenly full of ridiculously high-effort perspective flexes
Macross Frontier led me to believe "deculture" was some kind of zentradi catchphrase or expletive or something but I'm like 3/4ths done with the original show and they've never said it once
Shoji Kawamori: Okay the next shot is 25 seconds of the Macross smashing its way through several kilometers of alien armor
Sound designer: I have one "giant spaceship hitting metal" noise and it's 300ms long
Shoji Kawamori: This episode is going to be broadcast in three days
I had hoped things would pick up but the pacing of this show is just asymptotically approaching zero as I get into the last few episodes lol
infuriating love triangle plot sustained by every character making the most incomprehensibly awful decision at every conceivable juncture
instead of a personality the protagonist's brain consists of a large toggle switch that randomly flips between "debilitating pining" and "be a gigantic asshole for no discernable reason"
so I finished Super Dimension Fortress Macross
the plot ended around episode 27 and then they just did nine straight episodes of the protagonist just being a complete shithead to his friends for literally no reason and then he decides to be a space cop the end
this first tweet got a lot of Likes so it's worth noting the show doesn't actually have any particularly coherent thoughts about War Stuff
its final opinion is just kind of a shrug like "War is Bad but also somebody needs to be the space cops" lol
I dunno man it started INCREDIBLY strong and then just... got worse and never really recovered :(
tons of really cool ideas and super stylish art direction, bogged down by disastrous pacing and character drama mostly driven by people being jerks and then feeling bad
okay yeah this... makes sense lol
@AmazingThew Yeah, infamously Studio Nue got an order for, like, 12 more episodes than they planned, but then immediately had a budget-cut.
Honestly feels like it'd be a really good 6-episode OVA instead of 36 TV episodes
or.... a movie, which they did actually do later lol
is Do You Remember Love good? I suspect if you want to watch 80s Macross a movie would be a much more pleasant way to go about it
anyway I think my review of Super Dimension Fortress Macross is that you should watch Macross Frontier
I watched Frontier like a month ago and it ruled so insanely hard that I have to go watch the other 40 years of this franchise now
